Balnarring is a family friendly SUP Destination, on Western Port. This small coastal community is about 60 minutes south east of Melbourne with a sandy, family friendly beach about 2kms from the village. Another east to south easterly facing location, it’s a perfect spot for beginners when the wind is from the NW to W directions.
It’s also a very popular beach with local racehorse trainers who bring their horses to walk in the shallow waters. Early morning paddlers will often find themselves sharing the waters with horses and possibly dolphins!
Balnarring was originally settled around 1857 and early reports tell of an area “thick with honeysuckle and sheoak”, and that the area from Somers to Point Leo contained “good soil, good grass, and open forest timbered with Gums wattle and Sheoak trees”. Early settlers were involved in wattle bark stripping and cutting piles and sleepers for shipping to Melbourne via Shoreham Beach which is a little further south of Balnarring.
There’s a small shop that sells food and drinks, a barbecue and toilet/changing area and lots of sand for the kids.
