Point Leo, on the shores of Western Port is one of the closest SUP Destinations to Melbourne if you want to try SUP Surfing. The area offers fun protected waves on the mid to high tide for everyone from beginners to intermediate surfers.
On a high tide, it’s a great location for beginners to practise their flat water skills and for surfers to try and catch their first wave. Best wind directions are anywhere from South around to North. Winds from the North East around to South East are directly onshore and make for unpleasant paddling conditions.
When the ocean swells are out of control on the beaches from Gunnamatta to Portsea, Crunchies Point at Pt Leo is a great location for beginner surfers. The waves have lost a lot of their power by the time they reach this point, so the area is a favoured location for surf schools and can get quite crowded at times. As well as Crunchies Point, there’s another small wave that breaks closer into shore – but only when the swells are big. This spot is called Treloars and is also good fun for beginners.
If you are wanting to try SUP surfing for the first time, we can show you some great little waves that are suitable for beginners and often uncrowded. It’s not a good idea to venture into a crowded surf zone on your first time in the surf – unless you’re with an experienced surf instructors – so give PSUP a call if you want to try SUP surfing for the first time.
At low tide, the reef is exposed and quite a walk to get to flat water – so it’s also a good idea to check the tides before heading for this location.
