Rye Ocean Beach – a SUP destination for the experienced SUP surfer
The Rye Ocean Beach (or Rye Back Beach) is a rugged ocean beach that receives the full force of the southern swells. There are underlying reef structures that tend to create sand bars which in turn produce fantastic waves. However, most of the breaks along this coast are transient. One day you can be riding world class waves, the next day the same spot may only be offering “straight handers” (close out waves).
For the experienced SUP surfer, the area produces a lot of fun waves. On most days when the surf is good, you really need to know what you are doing, be a strong swimmer and be familiar with open ocean conditions. Peninsula SUP offers lesson and guided surf sessions along this coast. Check out our SUP Surf sessions for experienced surfers here. When the swell drops or goes almost flat the region can produce some fantastic open water paddles and SUP surfing adventures for the less experienced SUP paddler.
Rye Ocean Beach has no life saving patrols (the nearest patrolled beaches during summer are at Gunnamatta, Sorrento and Portsea) at any time of the year, so if you aren’t familiar with reading water conditions or not a strong open ocean swimmer and not comfortable with open ocean conditions, then it may be best to stick to the waters of Port Phillip or Western Port or go and get some lessons.
